Gaston County is located in the Charlotte Region of North Carolina, immediately adjacent to the western side of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
Gaston's 2008 population was 206,679, eighth largest among the state's 100 counties and second largest in the Charlotte Region.

Gaston is bounded on the south by York County, SC, on the north by Lincoln County, NC, and on the west by Cleveland County, NC.

Gaston is midway between the Florida Keys and New England, and just 200 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, making it a strategic center for serving the entire Eastern United States.

Gaston County's Geography Features 364 Square Miles Of Diverse Topography

The County includes approximately 364 square miles of diverse topography, mostly gently rolling hills. Higher elevations include Kings Mountain Pinnacle at 1,705 feet above sea level, as well as Spencer Mountain and Crowders Mountain. Average elevation in the County is 825 feet. The Beautiful Catawba River Supplies 1.5 Million People

The beautiful Catawba River, which supplies drinking water for 1.5 million people, plus its South Fork tributary in Gaston County, provide major natural drainage as well as abundant boating and fishing opportunities.

Gaston's climate has an average temperature of 60 degrees year-round, 78 in summer and 43 in winter. Average annual precipitation is 44 inches, and average relative humidity is 54 percent.
